Do Japanese love Madagascar?

I'm currently watching the well-known japanese drama Hanazakari no Kimitachi e. The characters are stupid as hell but it's just a lot of fun.
In 2 of the episodes they mention "Madagascar." That's something! It sounded weird the first time you hear it, especially with the japanese accent.
